We are thrilled to have secured this parcel of Mourvèdre on the rocky slopes of Moon Mountain AVA in the Mayacamas range. This varietal is now exceedingly rare in the North Coast, despite being widely planted by immigrants in the late 19th century. Yet, it can do wonders. The soils here are decomposing fracturous volcanic rock, and the vines can break right through to develop complex root systems, leading to deeper wines. We fermented this with 50% whole clusters for spice and a touch of savage character, so singular to this varietal. Aromatics of ripe raspberry, cranberry, white peppercorn, dried rosemary and fig waft from the glass. On the palate, the wine is powerful but fresh, with loads of spice and deep red fruit flavors. The finish is long and graceful, with fine tannins adding focus. 68 cases produced from one 500 liter puncheon and one barrel.
Made from 100% Mourvedre coming from Sonoma's Moon Mountain District, the 2018 Mourvedre is deep garnet-purple in color. It begins a little closed, offering subtle, broody suggestions of underbrush, grilled meats and tar over a core of black cherries and baked blackberries plus hints of new leather and black truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has great concentration and tension, supported by grainy, well-managed tannins and finishing long and earthy.
The outstanding 2018 Mourvèdre is a pretty, elegant style of Mourvèdre, offering medium-bodied notes of white pepper, blueberries, and peppery herbs. With ripe, moderate tannins, beautiful balance, and a clean finish, drink this feminine, elegant 2018 over the coming 7-8 years. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it last longer.
